Very solid, nice looking brushed aluminium cover, standard technical characteristics (1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, N270 intel atom 1.6Ghz, wifi b/g/n, gigabit ethernet etc). Nice battery even though 2 cell, but these 2 cell are supercharged or something and they last 3-4 hours. Very thin chassis. Uncomfortable to open lid, but it's ok. Cheap in price but excellent quality. If battery life 3-4 hours is ok then it is much better than eee 1000 series. Lightweight, ~1.2kg. Easy to upgrade with SSD and increase RAM. Slots are available on the botttom. Unfortunately no extra battery pack option available. Didn't see any on the market, seems that 2 cell is the only option. Very silent, and cool enough compared to 1000 series. With SSD would be even more quite.
Great little netbook!
Paired it up with OCZ 2GB module, a caselogic neoprene case with pouch and a microsoft netbook bluetooth mouse. Total $480 for everything on amazon, free shipping.
Its fast and the aluminum finish is SWEET! :D
The only complaint is the left shift key, its positioned in a bad place and I always hit the up arrow.
This was fixed now on the eee pc 10inch 280 atom cpu but no aluminized version yet, so time to wait for that or the Adamo from Dell that looks VERY nice.
The caselogic fits it perfectly and I carry the charger, ms bluetooth mouse and my cybershots dock and usb cable... perfect!
Background: PC Tech with at least 10yrs. exp. Looking for a portable yet capable netbook to keep handy at all times.
Review --
Looks: Much better looking and better feeling than many other netbooks including other models of ASUS. Less finger print noticeable areas. Slight crick when opening the lid. Being small as it is it should be handled gently.
Battery: Though it is only a 2-cell battery it still on average gives 3+hrs of battery life. It keeps the weight down and also keeps the heat low. I have not been able to use it as a hand warmer for the cold New England weather. :) Though, I wish ASUS gave an option to upgrade the battery capacity or at least option of purchasing another for backup.
Processor: Intel Atom works quite well and is low energy consumption.
Hard drive space: Plenty of space for most users. Though they have solid states available in many Netbooks, just upgrading WinXP will go over your size capacity for those systems so it's not worth getting those yet.
AC adapter: nice small and compact. Only thing I don't like is that the plug is a bit loose when plugged into the back.
Keyboard: Right-shift key is truncated. If you rely on that shift key, you will have some annoyance. Otherwise the keys are good sized, though not full sized.
Display: Max fit resolution: 1024 x 600; Max resolution (requires vertical scrolling): 1024 x 768 (this helps with software that has a minimum resolution requirement, but can be an annoyance for those not able to adapt to not viewing the whole screen w/out scrolling. Having an external monitor will help a little. This is system is not meant to be your primary computer esp. if you do alot of detailed work requiring a lot of desktop real estate. If you are not ok with alot more vertical scrolling even just for viewing websites, then Netbooks in general are not a good choice for you. Display is nice and bright.
Ports and connectivity: wireless card can handle n networks, which is a plus. webcam, bluetooth and 3 USB, cat-5 ethernet, VGA monitor, useful SD card port (great for easy backups and picture downloading)...(no modem)
Operating System: Winxp home. For general use, WinXp is fine, in fact it will keep resources low (compared to pro and vista)
Recommended additional purchases: External DVD drive for software installs and backup option. It comes with DVD viewing and writing software pre-installed but no drive. External Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor for more comfort when working at home/office.
Summary: Over all with 1mo worth of use, it has been a tough little work horse for me.
Backup: as a tech the most important thing to add, though not specifically related to this review, I must add that getting a good backup scheme is important, why not revisit your backup plan now while you are purchasing a new system. External drives and automated backup software can make this task easy once setup.
I hope that was helpful.
I've had this netbook for about 2 months and am highly satisfied. I bought it just for traveling but like it so much that it's become my primary laptop at home.
PROS
--Quiet and cool. I am amazed how cool and quiet this runs compared to all the other notebooks I've owned which have included an HP, Sony Vaio, Dell, and an Acer (my other current notebook) Maybe it's the chip. Or maybe it has to do with Asus' Super Hybrid Engine which can shift the processor into various modes as needed. I keep mine on Auto Mode. At any rate, I am so impressed with the silent operation I am going to look into Asus first when I buy my next larger sized notebook. This netbook also doesn't get hot on the bottom -- a little warm, but not hot.
--Looks & construction. This netbook is not only well made, with well finished sturdy surfaces, but it looks smart too. Unlike the shiny glossy finishes of some netbooks, the nice brushed aluminum surface of the 1002HA doesn't show smudges and fingerprints as much. The dark gray color is nice too.
--Price & features. I think you get a lot for the relatively low price -- ie, a non-glare quality screen, good usable keyboard, good trackpad, generous 160gb drive.
--Comes with a nice black neoprene case
--AC adapter is nice and small too
CONS
--I'm not crazy about the single mouse button. It's easier making right and left clicks when there are two separate ones.
--I wish they had extended the aluminum finish to the bezel surrounding the screen. That is the only place they use a glossy finish which shows up dirt.
The cons I listed were so relatively minor it was not worth knocking off a star for them. This is really a great netbook.
ABOUT THE RIGHT SHIFT KEY POSITION -- I've seen many complain about the right shift key position and it is awkward. But there is a very EASY fix. Download the free utility SharpKeys from the web. Then simply use this application to reconfigure the keyboard so that the up arrow becomes the right-shift key and the right-shift key becomes the up arrow. This is what I did and it works very well. I have even read where someone exchanged the hardware keys on their keyboard to reflect this change, but it's not worth it to me and I don't recommend that. You could break your keyboard if you're not careful. During typing, I rarely forget about the newly reconfigured keys, and when I do it's no biggie.
Three other tips:
When browsing the net, some sites are hard to navigate with the smaller screen, an issue common to ALL netbooks. If you use Firefox, press F11 when you need the extra screen space and the menus will be hidden. Press F11 again to bring back the normal menus.n
If scrolling in Firefox is a little balky or slow, try unchecking "Disable when keying" under "Tapping" for the Elantech options. This made scrolling in Firefox much smoother.
Get an external CD/DVD drive to load up software and play movies. If you do, go for one that can be powered solely by the USB port. Not all of them can. Ones by LG usually can and I have an LG GSA-E50L which works great with it. However, if you don't have an external drive, and you are on a wireless network at home, you can set up other computers on the network to share files and even disc drives with the 1002HA. This lets you share documents and install software all from another computer. Just be sure to change the sharing privileges of the shared partitions back to their original state after you finish.
Received this laptop from my father as birthday gift, like it very much.
Great for outdoor activities.
1002HA is very slim and light weight yet very solidly built. The brushed aluminum doesn't pick up many fingerprints very easily, looks better than I'd expected.
The battery is built into the body beautifully rather than the drum type protruding from the backs of some other netbooks, so the computer is less bulky and more aesthetically pleasing. It adapts the "Polymar" type batter which is commonly used in mobile phones, so even thought it has only 2 cell it still last for 5+ hours - amazong.
The screen is also good, no horizontal scrolling needed.
The computer is quick so there is no big difference when I compare it with my old laptop. I am going to upgarde the RAM to 2GB and I am expecting a better performance from this tiny machine.
It took me 2 months on deciding what to get. Samsung or the eeePC. Well, it was hard. They are both amazing PC's and on the other hand I had an Asus 4G eeePC that accompanied me on my bike trips including one across USA and just sleeping in a tent. It held up good so Asus was my first choice.
So I went for it and got the 1002HA. But what I received I was not prepared for. WOW! Realizing now that this PC is way to fancy for my lifestyle. I can see that it will hold up on the adventure trips but o boy, it is beautiful. I feel like an upper-class attorney driving a Ferrari.
Everything works fine and man is this netbook fast. It is silent and very fast. I Added 2 Gig RAM with ease. And just when I received it, the price dropped with $60. Now that was not nice Asus.
I have been running this netbook for 3 days non stop and it is amazing how cool it stays. I worried about the right shift button but it is not that bad. I am still in love.
Just to give you background on my PC experience. I have done software development for the last 21 years and know computers very well. This netbook excels the expectations I had. I can not comment on the other netbooks as I have not worked on them.
The upgrading is ez and everything is very accessible at the bottom e.g. RAM, HD and even Wi-Fi card upgrade. I also like that they put the 2 usb ports on the left so less issue with mouse on the right for movement space.
O yes, I read the complaints regarding the BIOS upgrade (sound problems) so I will not do such an upgrade soon. I will wait till everything on the sound is sorted before upgrading the BIOS. So far I can not see the need for an upgrade as everything works real good.
Thx Asus.
I was very interested in the mini computers and after researching it online I saw this one had very favorable listings so I purchased it. The first one delivered was "dead on arrival" but the replacement is a gem. I did upgrade the memory as suggested and I love the size and ease of use. After purchasing 2 Dell studio laptops for my children for school, mine is just right for my needs of retrieving work emails, banking, and general enjoyment! The price was right and offers me the capabilities of my work computer. I would highly recommend for grandparents, new users or those who travel and need the capabilities of their work systems. You've got it all!
All in all the best notbook in the market.
Design: Sleek, Sexy, Professional, Compact, and shiny.
Features: all the best you can find in a newbook - including bluetooth, wireless N, 4-hour battery life and oodles of online storage, it is truly an "On-The-Go" machine.
Highly recommend the 1002HA to anyone.
It really does look good - very sleek and "professional".
The "brush aluminum" cover never attracts fingerprints - which is very good design to me cause I hate to see fingerprints all over my NB.
Very portable and light weight. Highly recommend.
