The mouse does everything as promised per Microsoft's specifications.

1. Being a laser mouse, Not optical, It will scan on just about any surface I place it on, except glass, Yes I have 2nd PC on a glass desktop.
2. It is highly accurate and has shift on the fly DPI settings (400, 800, 2000) great for a 1st person shooter game. If you don't like the presets, it's customizable as well.
3. Teflon feet makes it move extra smooth, and as an added bonus you get two more sets of feet for desired surface tension and you can remove the feet by hand (No tools needed).
4. Weights, you can adjust how heavy the mouse is by adding weights up to 30grams, Example if you like a good solid feel to the mouse, add some weights to it, or if you want to move the mouse with very little effort then remove all the weights.
5. 7 buttons, (1,2)Top Left & Right buttons; (3)Click center scroll (metal) wheel; (4)DPI select (3 small buttons); (5,6)Two back space buttons (programmable via another button) on the left side of the mouse, these are placed in a vertical position which makes it easier for you to maneuver your thumb; (7)Programmable Menu button.
6. The accessories (weights & mouse feet) come in a small case which clips to the mouse cord and keeps it steady or out of your way.

Okay a couple of cons,

1.The center scroll wheel is made out of metal and has serrations in the center, But is is slippery (No rubber coating) and takes time to get used to and, it's not a tilt wheel (Use the thumbs buttons instead.
2. Being a gamer mouse, you may not wan't all those DPI settings or adding weights, or don't add the weights and leave the DPI settings alone.
3. It's a corded mouse.
4. Retail price is about $75.00,
shop around (I got mine for less then $40 on Amazon).

Conclusion,
This is good full featured mouse, the plastic housing has a matte finish to it, cool red glowing lights on the bottom, illuminated display's on top. If you want a mouse with all the bells & whistles than this is for you.

I play a lot of first person shooter games, and this is a great mouse. It replaced a Logitech G7 and was a good trade. Those side buttons are a great idea, and every movable part is light and crisp. The "hump" on the back where your hand lays felt odd for the first few days, but now that I'm used to it, other mice feel strange without it. The mousewheel has a very light touch. Windows recognized it instantly before I'd even loaded the software.

Product came in a beat up box and was missing 2 weights. No wonder the price was cheap.

so maybe I just haven't gotten used to it. Well I don't think you should have to get used to a mouse. I knew from looking at reviews that this mouse was going to be big, but sadly this was all I had to go on since I never saw this mouse in the store so I ordered it off the web. I bought this mouse for the features. The feature list is impressive, but I don't know if I really will be able to make use of the DPI adjustment buttons. I mean do we actually need to have 3 buttons why not just one to switch up or down??? And that stupid LCD is useless because they have 2000 written over the light so you can't make out what it's actually saying. WOW, ****ing m$ ****ed that one up. I really liked the idea of having two over/under thumb buttons but the mouse is so big it's kind awkward to hold it such as I can reach those buttons easily. My hand heats up like no other!! and the macro is impossible to reach! I tried 20g of weights and I didn't like it so I'm trying 20g now. Also the left/right click are a little too sensitive. I like the easy to change mouse settings I've used that button a lot but when I find something I'm happy with I'll just stick with that. Anyways the mouse looks pretty good, but it's not comfortable even for someone with big hands and my hand gets so sweaty and HOT! I think my wrist is even starting to cramp up!!

I gave it 3 stars cause someone maybe would like this mouse, cause it's got some pretty nice features but it's not really my cup of tea. TRY THIS ONE BEFORE YOU BUY THIS ONE.

I change mouses almost every year. And this year I decided to try out the sidewinder, and its not good. Its just too big and too fat. Like the other reviewer said, its for large hands. The MS software was not helpful at all. The instructions are completely useless. Should have gone with a new Logitech instead.

I am here to say that when I got this mouse I was amazed at how much better it looked in person than in the picture online. I am very happy with this product and all the features that it has. There is one thing however that does not affect me at all but may affect you, DO NOT GET THIS MOUSE IF YOU HAVE SMALL OR PETITE HANDS. This mouse may be difficult to use the clickers with. I have big hands so this mouse is comfortable and easy to click with. I also think this mouse is for you if you want to be a gamer like me.

Other Note: Just off topic, if you're going to get a keyboard with this item then I suggest that you get the Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard these items go well together. =]

I needed a replacement for my trusty Logitech G5, which was dying. I tried the G9, but it was too short for my tastes; I needed a mouse with some body to it.

The Sidewinder fills that niche nicely. It has almost everything I was looking for in a mouse, particularly the on the fly DPI switching with some sort of visual indicator to let you know what setting you are on.

The mouse is very comfortable and I think built on par, if not to higher standards, than other gaming mice.

I would have given 5 stars if it had a tilting scroll wheel for horizontal scrolling and the option to alter the USB polling rate. I've found some games, like F.E.A.R., are especially sensitive to high USB polling rates, so having a mouse that can alter this is nice. Unfortunately the sidewinder lacks this.

Let me just say that I've been playing FPS (first person shooter) games since the old days of Castle Wolfenstein and I've always used regular mice to play. When I was younger, it wasn't a problem to spend hours on a game with no aches and pains, but now I can't use a normal mouse for much longer than an hour without a twinge somewhere or another in my hand. When I was looking into getting a new mouse to replace the little optical one I had been using (quite painfully, might I add), I came across this in a computer store. I tried the demo model and ordered one immediately. I was hooked!

This mouse is BIG and HEAVY when compared to most mice and, when put up against the Logitech gaming lineup, it seems to be at a disadvantage. The mouse seems less graceful and the buttons aren't as hair-trigger responsive as the Logitech lineup...however, once I started seriously using this mouse in everyday situations (net surfing, Photoshop, etc.) it really showed its excellent design. It fits comfortably in the hand and doesn't require that the fingers be constantly poised above the buttons. You can rest your fingers across the buttons and push easily when you want to click. This is CRITICAL in games for me, since holding my fingers over the buttons (as I had been doing before) was what seriously wore my finger tendons out so quickly. Being able to rest my fingers, yet respond quickly to input helped keep my game scores up while not wearing out my hand. The weights seemed gimmicky at first, but I quickly learned that extra weights really helped me keep the mouse stable and it reduced my twitching in FPS games.

The LCD IS a gimmick, no doubt, but the ability to switch 3 DPI settings on the fly is nice. In FPS games, general gameplay is good around 2000 DPI, but precision shooting (like for a sniper class in an FPS) requires MUCH less mouse movement over a broad area and more controlled movement in a smaller area. 1600DPI is perfect for this. I can instantly switch, as needed, with no delays. The side buttons are also perfect for alt fire and are easily pressed with the thumb. I haven't used the macros, so I can't comment on that feature, but even the heavy scroll wheel just feels much nicer on the fingers.

The feet might make a difference if you're not using a nice mousepad.

The best feature by far is the weighted box that stores the spare feet and weights. It holds down the cable very well. Kudos to Microsoft for getting that right!

In conclusion, I would say that if you still have the ability to poise your index and middle finger over sensitive mouse buttons for hours on end, you might find better results with another mouse. However, if you've got scars on your tendons from too much mouse use, trying this mouse out will be wonderful. The weight, button presses and ergonomics are great. The bonuses of the DPI switch, adjustable weights/feet and the cable weight box just turn this mouse into an excellent value.

5 stars. A worthy recipient of the Sidewinder name.

The mouse seemed to function OK at first but not much better than the cheapo mouse I was using before this one. Now I am having a problem with the mouse pointer when I move the mouse slowly its jittery and doesn't want to move like it's fighting against me. This is very frustrating seeing how I bought this mouse with the expectation that I was getting a precision gaming mouse. The other drag is sending it back for replacement (assuming something is wrong with it) will cost as much in shipping charges to buy a new mouse....... a cheapo this time. Don't throw you money away.

The on-the-fly DPI adjustment is sweet, once you get used to it -from soldier -to tank -to gunship in BF2142 for instance -don't notice the cord, but do notice the lack of dosh I have to doll out for batteries vs. a cordless -more for my mp3 player -definitely meant for someone with gargantuan hands -but when used with a wrist gel-type support, the fingers and thumbs are in perfect position -if it only had 3 colors like my KB.....but get it anyway -weights are sweet -have it maxed so sniper shots go for the noggin as planned -not the sproingy boot unlock -d'oh!
