LeapFrog Clickstart My First Computer

Product Description

LeapFrog's ClickStart My First Computer is the first preschool learning system featuring a desktop experience that looks and works like a grownup PC. The ClickStart platform turns any TV into a child's first computer, simultaneously introducing core preschool skills and basic computer functionality. A friendly green puppy named Scout accompanies little ones on their learning journeys, appearing on the wireless keyboard with automatic shut-off as well as in onscreen games and activities.

Rich with content, ClickStart My First Computer offers exciting games as well as engaging software applications that work together to help kids earn treats for their friend Scout. Includes wireless keyboard with automatic shut-off, cartridge based console, child-sized mouse and right or left hand adjustable mouse pad. Requires 4 "AA" batteries and 4 "C" batteries (not included). Measures 16" x 8".

I am unable to give a review on the toy educational value because my son haven't had the chance to use it. But I will rate the delivery condition of the item with a 5 star because it came in excellent condition. Also the product came in a timely manner. It is very sturdy and well build.

My wife and I bought the Leapfrog Clickstart and a few cartridges for our daughter based on past experience with other Leapfrog products. Previous experience with DVDs and other items has been great, however the Clickstart is a huge disappointment. First of all, after connecting it to the TV, we tried to enter her name and it refused to accept it. Her name is not unsual at all but for some reason I just would not work. I could enter unintelligible gibberish and it would accept that just fine. Then the mouse proved very difficult to manuever. It is very erratic, like someone with very nervous hands is using it. Next one of the cartridges would not work. After reinserting it several times, I finally got it to work. All the batteries are fresh, by the way.

To sum it up, Leapfrog really screwed up with the Clickstart. It could have been a great learning device, but now my daughter won't even use it because of the level of frustration. I doubt that we will ever buy Leapfrog products again. Be forewarned to stay away from the Clickstart and its cartridges.

Our daughter, 3, absolutely LOVES this game. She got it for Christmas about two months before her 3rd birthday and had no trouble using it. It comes with games built in which she loves to play. We've also purchased additional games and have been very happy with them. She enjoys having her "own" computer and it is also very educational. She enjoys some of the simple games like spelling her own name! We are very happy with this purchase!

Definitely purchase the AC adapter to save on battery costs!!!!

We thought that if we just used rechargeable batteries, we could avoid all the problems other people had with this product. We thought it would be worth the little incovenience of replacing the batteries often if it was a good game. We even tried it out before we gave it to our son to try to make sure we got a "good" one and we thought we did.

We were wrong. The fact that my son loves this game makes the fact that it doesn't work even worse. How do you explain to a small child they have to stop playing when the mouse freezes right in the middle of the game? After only two weeks, the mouse now freezes up even with fresh batteries. Though Leap Frog's web site says you can buy a replacement mouse, when we called to order, we were told they were on backorder. When we asked how long, they said though they were told 90 days, they aren't sure if that's true. What?!

All they can offer is advice to clean the battery connections with an eraser and their apologies. I wish I'd listened to the negative reviews before we bought. What good is a fun game if it doesn't work and the company can't make it work?

Like others have discovered, my mouse periodically will stop working all together. If I turn it off for about an hour, yes an hour, it will start to work again. This happens regularly, very frustrating when your 2 yr old kid is getting upset he cannot play.

We got this for our three year old who has a lot of energy and we did not trust to use our computer. He loves playing all the different games but he has trouble with the mouse but we put a mouse pad over the mouse paw(the place it tells you to use the mouse)and it helps.
I highly recommended this kid friendly computer for anyone that does not want there child to use there computer.

...it SHOULD come with the adapter. We bought the computer, brought it home and our daughter played on it for a couple of hours total and the battery ran out. We realized we should have bought the adapter, too, but also thought it SUCKS that it doesn't come with it already. The game obviously needs the adapter unless you want to keep replacing the batteries. The Leapfrog peeps have no shame, I guess.
Also, I don't like that the keyboard will turn off itself when its good and ready. There is no power switch. It turns off on its own after a few minutes. Since it works only with batteries, this wastes the batteries. And you can't just take the batteries out, you have to UNSCREW the dang compartment. Why did they have to make this so inconvenient?
This is a lot of fun for my daughter but it urks me that Leapfrog doesn't care about the power this game wastes.

I bought this leap frog click start for my daughter for christmas. She didnt know very many letters before and today, Jan 18, she knows amost all of them (upper and lower case). This computer has helped her alot and she loves to play with it. Sometimes she has a little ploblem moving the mouse around but for the most part she does a great job by herself. The mouse problem isnt even worth sending it back it's so minor. I will say to be careful what games to buy because some arent very educational. of the games we have right now the Learning Carnival is our favorite. I would say with a wireless mouse this would be a must have educational toy for all children!!!

My 3-year old son received this for Christmas recently & he absolutely LOVES it; nearly a month later, he hasn't stopped playing with it! He took to it very quickly & is so adept with using the mouse especially that he can log himself in & out as well as navigate each of the games with ease. I think he'll be ready for a real computer next year at the rate he's going!

This is a very kid-friendly & educational toy; it has several games built into the console, & my son's favorites are ABC Tree & Scout's House. We bought him 3 other games including Bob The Builder, Thomas & Friends, as well as Finding Nemo, & he's quickly mastered them all! In the beginning, it takes some practice for your child to use the mouse as there's only a small area on the mouse pad; but once they take to it as my son did, it won't be long before they're pointing & clicking like pros!

I very much agree with the other reviewers that purchasing the AC adapter specifically for this game is a very wise investment; this will save you a LOT of money on batteries! The keyboard takes AA batteries as well, but it seems to hold up pretty well; after nearly constant use since Christmas, we haven't had to change the batteries yet.

Overall, this is a must-have learning tool which will not only help your child learn the basics of letters, numbers & problem solving, but will definitely educate them on how to use a computer. I highly recommend it!

We received this toy as a gift.

All I can say is that the interface is needlessly frustrating for a child, the design is horrible, and the fact that there is no on/off button on the keyboard or even the ability to use an AC adapter (which is provided for the head unit) is just plain silly.

As a gift this is barely tolerable - I would not spend my own money on this device.
