Customer Buzz
I bought this computer to travel with and to talk to some of my toys that don't talk to my Mac. Overall it's a great machine. It's small enough to be a dayplanner, it's very light, and the battery lasts forever. I wish MSI had spent a little more on the speakers, they are really tinny and not loud enough.

I normally want a computer to surf the net, answer my emails and write a document PERIOD. My MSI Wind U120 does just that. I use it daily for work. It's small size makes it easy to carry around and is inexpensive. I dumped Microsoft Office which you must pay for after their warranty period and replaced it with OpenOffice which does the same things and is free. It will run OSX and Linux if you want to install them as well.

I paid more that what Amazon lists it at over a month ago, but am very pleased with my purchase. Highly recommend this netbook.

Before I purchased the MSI Wind 10 inch Netbook, I did my homework. Of all the 8-10 inch netbooks, it received the best over-all reviews, and indeed it is a sweet little machine. It's fast, small and light-weight and what a picture! I can't get over the resolution. It's so good that we use it as a TV (through Slingbox) in the kitchen. The only negative is the audio, which is tinny, but we hooked it up to Ipod speakers and solved that problem. This is a great value and Amazon offered it for the best price.

When I bought my MINI 10, I wasn't sure how to load programs on it. I do not have my computers networked, and I was under the impression that it would connect to my computer via a USB port . . . obviously, I'm not a computer IT person . . . but I do love new gadgets! It was very EASY to boot up. Everything practically loaded itself! I found that by copying my program CDs to my flash drive, they were simply a "click and install" option to load them on the Mini. I thought I was going to have more difficulty, but so far loading programs has been pretty easy. The Wi-fi is REALLY easy to use. If you set it up to automatically search for available connections, it's very convenient wherever you are at! I needed to have the XP OS so my Palm could sync with my Palm Desktop (I use it for my calendar and appointments). The program loaded very easily. I still need to sit down and plug in the Palm cradle to see if it will work, but I'm confident that it will not be difficult. In any case, I love working on my MINI! I will have to say that I put out $20 for a wireless mouse . . .I just prefer it to the pad on the laptop (any laptop for that matter!). Haven't run into any problems yet. . . time will tell all! I would definitely reccomend the MINI to anyone who wants quick access and has good sight! I'm sure that the small sized screen would be difficult for someone with bad sight!

#1 ... note, no memory expansion slot, unlike other MSI Wind counterparts. Please note! 1GB is all you got.

Physically, it is a nice netbook. Compard to the lates Eee PC i also bought, this MIS Wind's keyboard is significantly more comfortable.

However, it's still hard to say how well this unit will last.

1) Right away, the new mouse buttons start to act funny. When a technician installed memory (failed, because this one doesn't take any additional memory, didn't KNOW THAT!), afterwards the mouse button quit working. Had to re-open it, adjust it. To say the least, the new mouse button is not robust and may break down the road. The new Eee PC 1000HE has much better button configuration (feels a lot stronger), though the keyboard is significantly less comfortable than the Wind.

2) Now, the assumption is that a netbook with 1 GB un-expandable memory can do everyday net-tasks fine. Not quite. It freezes on web pages quite a bit, especially a page that has a lot of pictures to load. Try "huffingtonpost.com" ... it's a long page, with lots of pictures. Mine freeze or stalls whenever I go there.

3) Battery life long, but not as long as promised. I think it falls short of the 6 hour promise, more like 3 or 4. The Eee PC 1000HE does have longer battery (advertised 9, so far haven't ran out yet).

So, overall ... not so sure. It certainly seems to hold up in comparison with other netbooks (my Eee PC will freeze now and then too), and it certainly has had raving reviews from cnet, etc. But I really had hoped for better performance. To give an example, my heavier Dell Inspiron with Celeron Processor (3 years old now) has no performance glitches of this kind. So my disappointment with MSI Wind so far is probably an "expectation" issue, having been "raised" on good reviews.

I also bought this with the understanding it would be upgradeable to 2Gb. Amazon recommended the purchase of the additional 1 Gb and the carry case at the time of purchase. I understood that opening the case to upgrade would violate the warranty but I was willing to do that for the additional ram. I was very disappointed when after opening the case I discovered that it is not upgradeable. I have now violated the warranty and I have a useless 1Gb ram module to look at.

I just have two issues with the U120. First, the speakers are totally unacceptable. Sound quality is extremely poor and volume is too low for movies or music. Second, after having used the computer for three weeks, the displays has two lines running right down the screen. The best part about the computer is the 6-cell lithium battery, which gives it much longer usage without recharge than other netbooks.

I've had it for one week and love it. It is perfect for internet browsing and ok for office applications. The 1 gig memory is adequate.

I too was fooled into buying the 1gig ram upgrade due to the "commonly purchased together" link. I returned the ram and emailed a complaint, but the link touting the memory upgrade still exists. Even worse when I just came to the web page to write this review, a banner ad showed up to a memory supplier offering upgraded memory for the U120.

It just cannot happen due to the soldered on memory board.

I've owned my MSI Wind, w/6 cell battery, since November, and have no complaints (but, one suggestion). After traveling with notebook computers for at least the past 15 years, it is great to finally have an alternative that weighs less then 3 lbs, has a long battery life, and runs all the software that I normally use on the road.

One suggestion for MSI -- ship the netbook w/the Wi Fi turned on, or at least a card with a hint to his Fn F11 to turn it on. I only found out by finding that hint on the internet. Several friends who saw my MSI Wind went out and bought one of their own. They all like 'em... but all called to ask how to turn on the Wi Fi!

Great computer, not as powerful as my desktop, but perfect for travel. And, the price just keeps getting better!

I have owned this netbook for a few weeks now and I am pleased with it.

My ratings based on a maximum 5 star scale:

Size: *****
Weight: ****
Display: *****
Battery Life: *****
Keyboard: ****
Speed: ****
Features: *****
Value: *****

This computer is very practical for mobile computing. The keyboard is usable for people who know how to type and the battery provides plenty of extended power.

My complaints:
The keyboard, the location of the Fn (Function key) is where the Crtl (Control) ought to be and vice versa. The keyboard is cramped but big enough for someone who knows how to type to use.
The sound on this computer is poor via both the speakers and the via the internal headphone jack !? This makes watching a movie practically impossible - which considering the size of the hard drive and the battery life was something that would have been very nice to be able to do. I rated the computer 4 stars because of this, perhaps this is more or less important to you.
The display is only 600 pixels high and I find that a lot of software is made for a display size slightly larger - a minor inconvenience.

To make this computer more usable, I created a shared drive on my home computer network for transferring files to and from this computer. I also shared a DVD-drive on our kitchen computer so that this netbook could access a DVD drive, but this is not very practical because of the slowness of wi-fi, but if you have the ability to plug your netbook into a network via cable, this might work better. When you need to install from a DVD/CD, you can create an ISO image on another pc, copy that image to a thumb drive and then use a program like MagicISO to mount and read the virtual CD drive - or you can just shell out for an external CDRom/DVD reader/writer.

Overall I am very pleased with this computer, but it's too bad that the sound makes it no good for watching movies.
